Sofia Urquiola is a 12th grader with big ambitions and dreams. She moved here six years ago from Caracas, Venezuela. While the average person might have spent their first few years trying to adjust or fit in, Sofia achieved the status of valedictorian of her middle school graduating class.
Her time at UAG has been no less impressive. She served as student body president in the 10th grade and has been National Honor Society president for the last two years. She is also a member of the Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRHYLI). Through this organization, she focuses on advocacy, tackling issues that impact the Hispanic community, and promoting feminist values. She also proudly holds the Seal of Biliteracy in both English and Spanish.
Currently, Sofia is pursuing software engineering. She chose this path to challenge herself and explore her interests in programming, with the long-term goal of creating her own software. In addition to her passion for technology, she is also dedicated to pursuing medicine. This dual interest reflects her desire to blend innovation with service; she plans to continue tech as a side pursuit while focusing on her main career goal in the medical field.
In the future, Sofia sees herself volunteering abroad, sharing knowledge, and using her skills to make a positive impact on the world. Her multifaceted passions, from fashion and reading to baking, demonstrate her creativity and commitment to making the most of every opportunity while inspiring others along the way.
When asked what advice she has for freshmen and future incoming students, Sofia says:
