In 1989, David Baszucki, fresh out of college, founded Knowledge Revolution with Erik Cassel. They first made Interactive Physics, a 2D simulation used to teach physics concepts.
Years later, in 2003, Baszucki and Cassel rented an office in Menlo Park to work on the first prototype of what would become Roblox. The company was officially founded in 2004, and the platform was formally released to the public two years later, on September 1st, 2006.
Initially, Roblox was not very popular.. It began as a small passion project developed by Baszucki and Cassel, which slowly grew into the successful platform it is today. While growth was slow, the second half of the 2010s brought many new players. This boost was thanks to platforms like YouTube, with popular YouTubers such as Flamingo, Funneh, and KreekCraft introducing the game to their large fanbases.
People were amazed by the freedom Roblox offered—it was one of the first games of its kind to easily allow players to interact with others and express creativity. In 2020, the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantines led to the biggest numbers of players yet. With people unable to meet in person, Roblox provided a digital space where friends could virtually meet
While Roblox is a popular platform for people to connect and have fun, concerns about toxicity and safety within the community have been raised in recent years. Though these issues tend to be more prominent in certain games that focus heavily on individual-to-individual interaction, such as MeepCity, Welcome to Bloxburg, and Dress to Impress.
However, it is important to recognize that the majority of the Roblox community is safe and fun. The chance of meeting a positive connection and forming a bond is often much higher than the chance of encountering a toxic one. Even if a user encounters someone creating an unsafe environment, Roblox allows them to easily leave the interaction.
Furthermore, any digital platform accessible to children will inevitably have safety issues. Roblox is no different from any other app or online space. With proper parental supervision and standard precautions taken by children, the risks associated with Roblox are manageable.
Even with its imperfections, Roblox remains a fun platform where people can gather, interact, and form friendships. Its many pros ultimately outweigh the cons. Play with caution and reach out to a trusted adult if something does not feel right to you.
