Pathway Spotlight: Digital Design & Animation

DDA has had an amazing start to the school year beginning with our 10th Grade Pathway Induction ceremony. Each Grade has participated in an amazing out of classroom experience to introduce our students to the amazing world of Digital Design and Animation and showcase possible careers in the industry.
12th Grade received a personal animation studio tour at Titmouse Studios, where our students received a full studio tour, met real life animators and discovered first hand the job of an animator. Our 11th Grade participated in a digital design workshop at Apple to introduce them to new technology and programs that designers are using today. Our students had an opportunity to try out the new iPad Pros, Apple Pencils and Procreate to learn the basics to digital painting from Apple Instructors. Our 10th Grade went to INTER_IAM to tour a 2 floor art gallery space to learn how generative technology, merged with digital design and animation, can create a fully interactive experience. We then concluded the trip by engaging in a SOHO Art and Design Scavenger Hunt to discover iconic movie scenes, art murals and most instagrammed photo spots to learn how design can be utilized in many different industries and careers. We can’t wait and are looking forward to our Spring out of classroom experiences.

12th Grade has been learning the basics of 2D and 3D animation in Adobe After Effects. They have learned how to add and animate imagery, graphics, typography, effects, lighting, camera movements, and 3D models. They have completed their motion graphics logos projects and are now moving onto creating a 3D product animation. 11th and 10th Grade Photoshop classes have been working on their Food advertisements. Students were introduced to marketing techniques, how to create a powerful advertising campaign and selling to a target audience. They learned how to create strong compositions through the use of hierarchy and the principles of design. We practiced applying layer adjustments for color and tonal corrections and color enhancements, selection tools for selecting areas of an image and removing backgrounds and adding visual food effects for viewer impact and to communicate food flavors/food process & preparation.
12th Grade is continuing their 3D work in after effects. They are creating original product animations where they are adding lighting sources, camera movements, and 3D models. They will soon be preparing to take their After Effects Exam before transitioning to learning Maya. 10th and 11th grade Photoshop students are going to be researching and using the design process to create a retro soda can design that connects to a decade during the 1900’s. Students will be using colors, patterns, and designs from their chosen decade to celebrate that period of time, while also making connections to today’s target audience. This unit will introduce digital painting techniques through the use of Wacom Tablets, use of shapes, pen tool and various brush settings to achieve an original soda can design.
DDA is also beginning to set up college tours, specifically for digital/graphic design & animation majors and setting up in class partnerships with industry professionals and design/animation college professors. Watch out world – here we come!!! Here’s to the next designers, animators, innovators and artists. We are so proud of our DDA Pathway and excited to see where this journey takes them. Thank you all for the amazing work you’re doing.
