The sun rises over New York City, the daily routines of thousands of high school students largely hinge on one critical factor: Will their train run on time? For many, the day begins with a subway or bus ride that frequently turns into a test of patience. These frequent lateness do more than just irritate people, they can affect a student’s academic performance and overall well being.
To many teenagers, it may feel like a mystery, but there are actually good reasons for why trains are frequently delayed. The most common being signal problems, track work, sick or hurt passengers. In 2020, there were 720 instances of “person on the roadbed”. Bad weather is often a major problem. Heavy snow and rain can cause delays or even suspensions on some lines, especially the lines that go outside. If there is a blizzard or hurricane, a full shutdown is possible.
Not all trains are delayed equally. According to MTA data, the F train is the most delayed, with only 71% of its training running on time. A recent NY post article stated “The F is one of the longest lines and is affected by construction along much of its route, plus it is also affected by construction on other lines that are then rerouted onto the F line,”
Buses are not immune to delays as well. When there are delays for MTA buses, there could be route cancellations, (when routes stop temporarily), longer waits between buses and buses might skip stops. Buses are vulnerable to usual traffic as well. Be mindful of what time to leave the house to allow for these delays.
While we have no control over delays in transportation, there are some things we can do to help plan ahead. The official MTA App displays any delays on the routes in the system and can help people plan for an alternative route. Having heard parent and student concerns, they have also created a lateness verification website, almost like a late pass. If one logs onto delayverification.mta.info and inputs the route and time they were delayed (within 180 days of the trip), the MTA will send a verified lateness letter to show a school as proof of lateness. Other alternatives could be Citi biking and skateboarding if the destination is close enough.
New York City is a bustling metropolis of 8 million people that are always on the go. Our transportation system, while vast and complex, is not perfect. When getting to an important destination such as school, always leave room for delay and surprises. Be prepared to take alternate routes or even walk.
